Cord Cutting vs. Protection Work: What Comes First and Why It Matters

You've heard about cord cutting. Maybe you've tried it. Maybe it worked for a moment and then something shifted, or the person crept back in energetically and you couldn't understand why.

What most people don't realize is that cord cutting and protection work are two different tools. And like any tools, the order you use them in matters.

Getting the sequence wrong isn't just ineffective. It can leave you more energetically open than you were before you started.

What is the difference between cord cutting and protection work in spiritual practice? Cord cutting is the practice of intentionally severing or releasing energetic ties between yourself and another person, place, or situation. Protection work is the practice of fortifying your energy field so that unwanted energies, cords, or influences cannot attach or penetrate. Cord cutting clears; protection work shields. One opens a wound so it can heal, the other ensures nothing infects it while it does.

What Does Cord Cutting Actually Do to Your Energy Field?

Cord cutting removes an active energetic connection, but it temporarily creates an opening in your field where that cord was anchored. Think of it like removing a splinter: necessary, healing, but it leaves a small wound that needs tending.

In the immediate aftermath of cord cutting, your energy field is in a state of clearing. You may feel lighter, but you are also briefly more porous, more receptive to incoming energies, both welcome and unwelcome. This is why jumping straight into cord cutting without any protection framework can sometimes feel disorienting or even backfire.

How Do I Know If I Need Cord Cutting or Protection Work First?

Start with cord cutting if: the relationship or connection is actively draining you, you have a known energetic tie you want to release, and the person or energy is no longer in your immediate environment.

Start with protection work first if: the person is still in your life or orbit, you are in an active period of spiritual vulnerability (grief, illness, major transition), or you have reason to believe someone is intentionally sending negative energy in your direction.

If you're unsure? Do a light layer of protection first, always. It costs you nothing and prevents you from doing clearing work in an open field.

The Sequence That Actually Works

Here's how I approach this in my practice, and what I recommend for clients who are navigating both:

Phase 1: Ground and seal before you clear. Before any cord cutting work, establish your energetic foundation. This means:

  • Grounding meditation, feet on the earth (literally, if possible), roots going down

  • A protective boundary visualization: white or golden light sealing your aura, nothing unwanted enters

  • A simple protection prayer or spoken intention: "I am protected in this work. Only that which serves my healing may move through me."

Phase 2: Do the cord cutting. Now you work. Breathe. See the cord. Name it. Release it. Whether you use visualization, candles, scissors, a written ritual, or call in support, this is where the active severance happens.

Phase 3: Immediate post-cutting protection. This is the step most people skip. Right after cutting, your field has an opening. Seal it. Visualize a golden light flooding the space where the cord was. Speak or think: "This space is now filled with my own energy. It is whole. It is sealed. It is protected."

Phase 4: Ongoing protection work. Cord cutting is a moment. Protection work is a practice. After your clearing, install habits, a daily aura sealing, protective herbs on your altar or in your space, a regular smoke cleanse, a protective oil on your pulse points. These aren't superstition. They're maintenance.

Why Does My Energy Feel Worse After Cord Cutting Instead of Better?

Because you cut the cord in an open field with no protection installed afterward. This is the most common reason cord cutting seems to fail or leave people feeling worse, it's not that it didn't work, it's that the space left behind got filled immediately with ambient or directed energy.

It can also mean the cord was anchored more deeply than a single session addressed, sometimes lineage wounds and soul contract ties require layered, repeated work rather than a one-time ritual.

Should I Do Protection Work Before or After a Cord Cutting Ritual?

Both. A light layer of protection before grounds and shields you during the process. A more intentional layer of protection after seals the cleared space and prevents reattachment. Cord cutting done inside a protected container is exponentially more effective and far less likely to leave you feeling energetically raw or open.

This is why in my cord cutting sessions, I never do cord cutting without first establishing a full energetic container. The clearing and the sealing are part of the same work, not separate events.

Cord Cutting Without Protection Is Like Opening a Window in a Storm

You let the stale air out, good. But if you don't close it again, everything outside comes in, rain, wind, debris. Your energy field works the same way.

You deserve a complete practice. Not just the release, but the reclamation. Not just the opening, but the sealing.
