Use it as a Persephone offering, shadow-work tea, equinox ritual tea, devotional tea, altar offering, or herbal ritual bath according to your own spiritual practice.

Persephone’s Descent is a loose leaf ritual herbal tea inspired by Persephone, Queen of the Underworld, and the ancient story of descent, separation, return, and seasonal renewal. Created with crimson hibiscus, grounding rooibos, warming cinnamon and clove, dried pomegranate arils, and nutmeg, this spiritual tea was blended for those standing at a threshold: releasing what has ended, entering a season of inward reflection, or learning to trust what is quietly taking root beneath the surface.

At the heart of the formula is pomegranate, the fruit inseparably woven into the myth of Persephone and her passage between the world above and the realm below. Rather than treating darkness as something to escape, Persephone’s Descent invites you to approach it as an old initiatory landscape—a place where endings, mystery, transformation, and eventual return may coexist.

Use it as a Persephone offering, shadow-work tea, equinox ritual tea, devotional tea, altar offering, or herbal ritual bath according to your own spiritual practice.

✦ THE RITUAL

There are seasons when nothing is asking to be fixed.

Something has ended. A former version of you no longer fits. The answer has not yet arrived. The landscape looks bare, and all you can do is descend.

Persephone’s Descent was created for that threshold.

This blend is intended for rituals concerning endings, surrender, inner reflection, transformation, seasonal transition, and the quiet faith that descent is not necessarily disappearance.

In the Persephone myth, the journey into the Underworld is followed by return. The earth itself becomes part of the story: dormancy gives way to growth, absence to emergence, descent to ascent.

Brew this tea when you need a physical marker between what was and what comes next.

Pour the water.

Let the hibiscus stain it deep red.

Sit with what is finished.

Name what you are carrying into the dark.

Then leave room for what has not yet revealed itself.

This tea does not promise spiritual results or guarantee transformation. It is a ritual tool: something tangible around which you can build intention, contemplation, devotional practice, journaling, or ceremony.

✦ TRADITIONAL SPIRITUAL PROPERTIES

Pomegranate — Persephone, the Underworld & Return

Pomegranate is the central mythological symbol of this blend. In the story of Demeter and Persephone, Persephone consumes pomegranate seed in the Underworld, binding her to a cyclical existence between the realm below and the world above.

For this reason, pomegranate carries especially powerful symbolic associations with Persephone, descent and return, death and renewal, cycles, thresholds, fertility, and transformation.

Within Persephone-centered devotional practice, it is also one of the most recognizable foods associated with her mythology.

Hibiscus — Crimson Color, Passion & Release

Hibiscus gives Persephone’s Descent its rich crimson infusion.

In this formulation, its vivid red color is used symbolically to evoke the pomegranate, blood, vitality, depth, and the visual language of the Underworld. Hibiscus also appears in various contemporary magical and folk practices surrounding passion, attraction, and emotional intensity.

Here, however, its primary role is more specific: the red of descent, release, and life continuing beneath apparent endings.

It is a symbolic component of this House of Cleo Devine formula rather than a historical herb of Persephone worship.

Rooibos — Grounding the Descent

Rooibos forms the earthy foundation of the blend.

Rather than claiming an ancient Greek association that does not exist, House of Cleo Devine uses rooibos symbolically for grounding, steadiness, earthiness, and the physical act of returning to the body during reflective ritual work.

Its naturally smooth character also balances the sharper tartness of hibiscus and pomegranate.

Cinnamon — Warmth, Movement & Transformation

Cinnamon has long accumulated associations in later folk and magical traditions with warmth, vitality, success, attraction, prosperity, protection, and the energizing of ritual work.

Within Persephone’s Descent, cinnamon represents the spark that remains alive in the darkness—the heat beneath the sleeping earth and movement within a period that may outwardly appear still.

Clove — Protection, Strength & Fire

Clove is frequently incorporated into folk-magic and contemporary magical practices concerned with protection, strength, cleansing, prosperity, and warding.

Its sharp warmth gives the blend another layer of fire: a symbolic reminder that descent need not mean powerlessness.

Nutmeg — Fortune, Movement & Possibility

Nutmeg carries a long history as a valued aromatic spice and has gathered folk-magical associations with luck, prosperity, opportunity, and favorable movement.

Only a touch appears here, adding warmth while symbolically pointing toward possibility beyond the current season.

A note on tradition

The ingredients in Persephone’s Descent should not all be interpreted as historically documented offerings to Persephone.

Pomegranate is the blend’s direct mythological link to the goddess. The remaining botanicals were selected for flavor, color, atmosphere, and their broader symbolic or folk-magical associations.

We believe naming that distinction matters.

✦ PERSEPHONE, QUEEN OF THE UNDERWORLD

Persephone occupies a remarkable place in Greek mythology.

She is both Kore—the Maiden—and Persephone, Queen of the Underworld.

Her best-known myth is intertwined with her mother, Demeter. After Persephone is taken into the Underworld, Demeter's grief and anger cause the earth to cease producing. The gods eventually arrange Persephone's return, but because she has eaten pomegranate seed in the realm below, she must spend part of the year there.

Her disappearance and return became closely associated with the changing agricultural cycle: barrenness, waiting, emergence, and renewed growth.

This is why Persephone has become such a potent archetypal figure for people contemplating:

• endings and beginnings
• descent and emergence
• liminal seasons
• personal transformation
• grief and return
• initiation
• the hidden life beneath dormancy
• maiden-to-queen symbolism
• seasonal cycles
• becoming someone new without erasing who came before

The pomegranate in this blend serves as a direct remembrance of that mythic threshold.

Using Persephone’s Descent devotionally

If Persephone is part of your personal spiritual practice, you might brew the tea while tending her altar, reading the Homeric Hymn to Demeter, journaling about descent and return, meditating on seasonal change, or contemplating the difference between an ending and an initiation.

A brewed cup may also be placed on an altar as a personal offering according to your own tradition.

The tea is not presented as a historical reconstruction of ancient Greek worship, nor does using it guarantee communication with Persephone or any deity.

It is a modern ritual blend inspired by genuine mythological symbolism.

✦ WAYS TO USE

1. BREW & DRINK

Prepare Persephone’s Descent as you would any loose leaf herbal tea.

Before drinking, consider naming what you are releasing or the threshold you are currently crossing.

You might ask:

What has completed its season?

What am I being asked to stop carrying?

What can remain unseen for a while without being abandoned?

What part of me is descending—and what might eventually return transformed?

Drink slowly while journaling, meditating, reading mythology, working with an altar, or simply sitting quietly.

2. ALTAR OFFERING

Prepare a fresh cup and place it on a Persephone altar or devotional space as a personal ritual offering, where appropriate within your spiritual practice.

The pomegranate in the blend makes this use particularly symbolically relevant to Persephone.

The tea can also accompany altar elements already meaningful to your practice, such as pomegranates, seasonal flowers, candles, written prayers, or devotional objects.

Remove food and beverage offerings according to the customs and practical considerations of your own tradition.

3. RITUAL BATH

Persephone’s Descent can also become a botanical ritual bath.

Brew the herbs separately in hot water and allow them to steep. Strain the botanical material thoroughly, then add only the strained infusion to your bathwater.

Use the bath as a symbolic threshold ritual for release, seasonal transition, contemplation, or emergence.

Do not place loose botanical material directly into plumbing.

4. SHADOW-WORK JOURNALING

Brew a cup before beginning reflective journaling.

Rather than approaching shadow work as something that must be forced or conquered, use Persephone's story as the framework:

Descent → Witnessing → Integration → Return

Choose one subject to sit with rather than attempting to uncover everything at once.

5. SEASONAL TRANSITION RITUAL

This blend is especially suited to the liminal feeling of the equinoxes and other periods when one season is visibly becoming another.

Use it to mark the transition deliberately: acknowledge what the previous season carried, what has ended, and what you want to carry forward.

✦ BREWING

1 tsp per 8 oz just-boiled water, steep covered 5–7 min. Best brewed at dusk or during seasonal transitions (equinox).

✦ INGREDIENTS

Hibiscus
Rooibos
Cinnamon chips
Clove
Dried pomegranate arils
